Target Market

Knowing who your perfect client is a great starting point when it comes to writing your ads or creating your webpage. It is important to know that what they see as important should be addressed on your marketing materials.

Sometimes when I write something that I intend to use as a marketing piece I will ask my wife to read it over. I want her to look it over just for possible spelling and grammatical errors. However, she always gave her opinion on the content. When I first started having her look it over it was frustrating because she would often let me know that the piece was not interesting to her. Of course it was not interesting to her, she is not my target audience. I learned to tell her to review it for only writing errors not for content.

I could write the best most technical article on proper grading around the house, however unless the reader is a home owner with drainage issues or perhaps another home inspector, most people would have not interest at all in reading that information I worked so hard on.

Writing good copy requires that the writer know things about the target audience. First the copy writer needs to know who the target audience is. Are they young or old? Is there an average age range that most of your clients fall into? What is the income level of your ideal client? Are they usually male or female? The biggest bit of information that you will need to know so as to write a marketing piece that will get you results is that you need to know what it is that is the biggest concern of your client.

When you know what is the biggest concern of your clients is you will then know what to address as you create your marketing piece. Having your marketing materials or website address something that has no interest to your potential client will not result is sales for you. Imagine if you are looking for a home inspector and the first inspector website you read tells you about how to select a car. You would very likely continue searching for another home inspector, one that has a consistent message.

When you write content for your marketing pieces and website. Keep in mind who your target audience is. By having your material address what the concerns your clients have you will be able to get more clients and not waste your time writing materials that your clients do not want to read..
